MCCOMB, Bill

1940 - 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William “Bill” McComb on October 17, 2024. He died peacefully in the long-term care center (CHSLD) in Coaticook, at the age of 84.

Born in Barnston, QC Bill was the son of the late Ida Neil and the late Hubert McComb.

He spent most of his childhood and adult life in Stanstead East near Ayer’s Cliff as the loving husband to his late wife, Sylvia Gilbert, for sixty-two years. He was a doting father to his only child Billy who pre-deceased him in 1993.

Bill was an only child but grew up surrounded by over 30 cousins and stayed close to many of them throughout his life. He will be fondly remembered by his cousins, their families, Sylvia’s family, and by dear friends, neighbors and work colleagues.

Bill enjoyed a 25-year career working for CP Railroad. He was stationed in Sherbrooke and St. Johnsbury, VT. Bill was known for his love of cars and mechanics. He used to race cars up and down route 143 with friends as a young man. Bill could fix anything with a motor; not surprisingly, he had a side job working for the Crook family’s garage in Ayer’s Cliff for almost 25 years as a mechanic and tow truck driver. Bill also worked for the town of Ayer’s Cliff for 10 years at the boat wash and skating rink.

Bill was a kind man who would do anything for his family and those he cared about. He will be greatly missed.

We wish to extend our gratitude for the compassionate and skilled care of the staff at the Manoir Stanstead where he lived with Sylvia for almost two years.

A celebration of life service will be held at Cass Funeral home, 900 Clough Street in Ayer’s Cliff on Wednesday November 27, 2024 at 1pm. Lunch reception to follow.

A private burial will occur in Spring 2025.

Bill’s extended family and friends

Bill was a good friend of both my father and myself. He was always available to help at the garage or to drop everything to go on a tow job anytime of the day or night. I will fondly remember how kind both Bill and Sylvia were to me when my father passed away. I’m sadly not going to be in town for Bill’s celebration of life, but I will always have fond memories of his unwavering devotion to his years working with us. My sincere condolences to all those who lost loved ones this year.

The McComb family

My sincere sympathy for your loss. I particularly remember Bill when he used to come into
the Thrift Shop each year looking for articles to make up a Hallowe'en costume. He was such a kind and friendly man.
